Robert Found Food, Community, and a Sense of Belonging at Feed Salem

Published On: August 7th, 2025

Robert was caught between a rock and a hard place. He’d come to depend on the Jason Lee Food Bank for many years — but one day, its doors closed for good. Robert thought he’d have to start his search for a food bank back at square one.

Then, a friend suggested he visit Feed Salem.

Feed Salem quickly became Robert’s go-to pantry. He’d visit each week to pick up the foods he needed — frozen meats, fresh produce, shelf-stable goods, and everyday staples like milk and eggs.

But over time, it evolved into so much more. He enjoyed the warm, welcoming atmosphere he found at Feed Salem, along with the chance to connect with neighbors from all walks of life. Eventually, it became Robert’s safe space — a community where he felt like he truly belonged.

“I like the food selection,” Robert says. “I like [Marion Polk Food Share], too. Everybody here is family, you know?”

His local food pantry also provides a network of support that extends to his four-legged companion, Bailey, who has made a couple of furry friends of her own among the other pantry-visiting pets.

“She’s friendly and has her little friends here,” Robert says. How cute!

The support Robert receives is a weight lifted off his shoulders. Not only does it help him bridge the gap when his limited budget just doesn’t stretch far enough, but it also reminds him that he’s not alone, and that people care.

“I’m on food stamps, and I only get 120 bucks a month,” he says. “This helps a lot.”

Look at what’s possible when you give! You’re making a life-changing difference here in Marion and Polk counties. Thank you for all you do to provide food and community for neighbors like Robert (and Bailey!).
