These Wheels Keep on Turning
At first, Toni was inspired to join Meals on Wheels as a volunteer because of her familial ties to the cause.
“My husband’s grandmother used to deliver Meals on Wheels in Silverton,” Toni said. “And my mom received meals. So, it was always meaningful, knowing the community it served.”
But now, after three years of dedicated service, Toni has watched the program take on a whole new meaning. What was once a simple way to spread a little joy and follow in her family’s footsteps has now blossomed into a profound community connection.
Simply by volunteering twice a week, Toni has helped build a strong, heartfelt network of support for her neighbors facing hunger. She loves to recall interactions with the folks on her delivery route, like the 90-year-old woman who always inquires about her day, or the 94-year-old man who expresses his gratitude for every meal.
“They’re gems,” Toni says. “They make my heart happy.”
But Toni’s story is filled with acts of kindness that go well beyond delivering meals and showing support. From helping a neighbor control her escaped dogs to maintaining another neighbor’s garden by clearing dry leaves, Toni’s compassion deeply enhances the lives of the people she serves.
Her proactive approach was particularly vital when she discovered a neighbor experiencing a medical emergency. Toni informed the Meals on Wheels office promptly, ensuring that the situation was handled with care and efficiency. This incident underscores the crucial role volunteers like Toni play — not only as deliverers of nourishing meals, but also as essential helpers in times of need or distress.
Dedicated volunteers — and kindhearted donors like you — nourish our community’s most vulnerable neighbors. Thank you for your generosity!
