From Guest to Giving Back
For most of his life, Kent made Tacoma his home base. But when his great aunt became unwell, he decided to move to the Willamette Valley to care for her. Helping others — especially his family — is just second nature for Kent.
“I wanted her to be able to stay in her home,” he said. “I’d be there to mow the lawn, pay the bills, and make sure she was comfortable.”
But hard times can hit anyone when they least expect it. For many years, Kent enjoyed working at the Portland International Airport — until a workplace injury sent him into early retirement. Since then, he’s been making ends meet through a combination of Social Security, Long-Term Disability benefits, and SNAP food
assistance.
“These programs are designed for basic survival,” Kent said. “Even though I get food stamps [SNAP benefits], it’s just not enough. I know I’m not alone in that situation.”
Even through all of life’s twists and turns, Kent knows that having reliable access to nourishing food can make all the difference. That’s why he sought support from our partner pantry, Feed Salem.
Feed Salem became his pantry of choice when he saw the great selection of fresh produce it offers. But he kept going back for the community of kindness he found among the staff and volunteers. They make him — and everyone — feel right at home. After several visits to Feed Salem, Kent was feeling inspired. He signed up to become a volunteer, and he’s never looked back.
“I was a guest at Feed Salem and two other pantries, and I was just so impressed with how Feed Salem was organized that I wanted to get involved,” he said. “I’ve been working the door for six months, and I work really hard to re-create the same accepting atmosphere that drew me to Feed Salem: being kind and welcoming everyone in with a smile.”
Kent hopes to volunteer in every position at the food pantry. He’s tried only a few so far, but he’s in it for the long haul.
“I’d like to inspire people to get involved — to commit to our community and help others,” Kent said. “Get involved and stay involved.”
Your generous support provides meals for neighbors like Kent who are giving back as much as they’re receiving.
