From Food Distribution to Education
At Chemeketa Community College, an old semi truck’s transformation embodies more than just the repurposing of materials. It symbolizes a pathway to empowerment and opportunity for students who navigate both food insecurity and academic pressures. This truck, donated by Marion Polk Food Share after serving in food distribution for years, now plays a crucial role in the Diesel Program.
Deemed unfit for road service, the truck has been transformed into a valuable educational tool. It now stands in the college’s workshop, where it provides hands-on learning opportunities for students tackling complex technical problems in the advanced mechanics course.
The truck’s refurbishment teaches students more than engine repair: They are learning to shape their futures. The program equips them with in-demand skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, time management, and attention to detail.
Meanwhile, food insecurity affects about 23% of undergraduate students nationwide, illustrating a significant crisis in higher education: the challenge of balancing studies with basic needs.
Chemeketa supports its students through its Student Food Pantry. Supported by Marion Polk Food Share and the Chemeketa Foundation, this service helps students focus on their education without worrying about food.
This semi truck’s transformation from a distribution aid to a vital educational resource illustrates a powerful cycle of service and learning. Chemeketa reinforces its commitment to fostering an environment where education serves as a pathway to stability and success.
We extend our deepest gratitude to all the donors, sponsors, and community partners who make projects like this possible. You are making a difference in the lives of many.
