Strengthening Our Community One Meal at a Time

Andy’s journey with Meals on Wheels began just a couple of years ago, sparked by a simple conversation with a friend. The decision would change his life and deeply impact the lives of those he serves in our community. 

A dedicated Meals on Wheels volunteer, who happened to be a friend, approached Andy, sharing the need for more drivers. It was a subtle invitation that Andy felt compelled to embrace. What followed was a beautiful journey of compassion and connection. 

Andy’s employer, recognizing the significance of community service, graciously accommodates his extended lunch-hour excursions once a week to deliver meals to individuals in need.  

On occasion, Andy’s family joins him on these deliveries, transforming it into a heartwarming family outing. As they conclude their route, they often make a delightful stop at Don Froylan Creamery, savoring some delicious quesadillas. But Meals on Wheels is about more than just food; it’s about the connections forged along the way. 

Over the past two years, Andy has created lasting bonds with the individuals on his route. One of Andy’s friends on his route is Bill, who lives alone. Their conversations have become a highlight of his day.  

“I enjoy the conversations, and we always find something to chat about.” said Bill warmly.  

As time has passed, and relationships deepen, clients have become increasingly candid about the personal challenges they face in their lives. These include health scares for them or their spouses, transportation needs, and any other burdens they may be shouldering. These conversations have created a space for encouragement and support. 

Bill echoed this sentiment, stating, “I can’t even begin to tell you. I feel like I’m being taken care of.” 

Andy and Bill’s story is a moving testament to the transformative power of Meals on Wheels in strengthening connections, fostering community, and nurturing a sense of belonging. Through the seemingly simple act of delivering meals, volunteers like Andy leave a profound impact on the lives of those they serve. This story also underscores that when businesses, like Andy’s employer, actively endorse and support community engagement, our entire community thrives.
