The Impact and Heart of Marion Polk Food Share’s Meals on Wheels Program

By Published On: December 11th, 2023

Marion Polk Food Share’s Meals on Wheels Program is a beacon of hope in our community. Meals on Wheels provides an average of 870 nutritious meals every day for homebound seniors and disabled adults. These meals are created with the help of a registered dietician, freshly cooked by our team of chefs and delivered with a warm smile and a friendly conversation by our dedicated volunteers.

Proper nutrition is essential for managing various health conditions. All of the meals are low in fat, cholesterol, sodium and sugar. By receiving nutritious meals at home, seniors can maintain their independence and continue living in their own homes.

At the heart of this program lies dedicated volunteers who selflessly give their time and energy to ensure no one in our community goes hungry or feels alone.

Susan, a dedicated Meals on Wheels volunteer for over nine years shares her motivation for volunteering.

“Volunteering at Meals on Wheels is a wonderful experience. It’s a great program and I’m pleased that I am still able to do something that helps somebody else’s life to be better,” she says.

“The staff at Meals on Wheels work really, really hard,” she continues. “They arrive at 4 am to make sure all the meals are prepared and ready to be delivered. Meals on Wheels has really helped so many people have access to nutritious food. The lunches are big enough for clients to save half of it for dinner. With the rising cost of groceries, this has helped a lot, because for some people, this is the only food they receive,” says Susan.
